PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO! Starring PHYLLIS COATES TV's First LOIS LANE on SUPERMAN! First time on DVD! In the tradition of earlier Republic jungle heroines TIGER WOMAN and NYOKA, PHYLLIS COATES joins the ranks of female headliners in the cliffhanger arena. Portraying pretty Jean Evans, African adventuress and wildlife explorer, Phyillis gained her heroine title from the natives she befriends and protects. Because she alone fought and killed a man-eating black panther, Jean is named THE PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO. The name is no idle boast either as, in one thrilling episode, Panther Girl battles a lion to the death as well. But even the daring Panther Girl did not expect to be challenged by gigantic Claw Monsters, creatures spawned by science gone wild! A ruthless scientist, Dr. Morgan (Arthur Space), has concocted a growth serum that causes crayfish to mutate and to grow to the size of an elephant. The reason for these monstrocities is to frighten Jean and the natives out of the district where he has discovered a jungle diamond mine. Joining Panther Girl in her fight is dashing white hunter, Larry Saunders (MYRON HEALEY). Heally is a very familiar face to matinee goers as he was a popular young actor during the 1950's. Though usually cast as a villain, Healey gets to play the hero this time and does well in the part. Morgan's henchmen Cass (JOHN DAY) and Rand (MIKE RAGAN) do their best to stop Panther Girl from showing movie film of the Claw Monsters to the outside world. In episodes such as "The Killer Beast," "Sands Of Doom," and "Crater Of Flame they pit Panther Girl and Larry against a killer gorilla, quicksand, crocodiles and deadly fire. Filmed in 1954, this was Republic's next to last serial.
